Will you join me, too, John?

John, I recently had the honor of joining a great event that brought together some incredible folks in TV, music, art, politics, and activism.

While I’d happily find any excuse to catch up with John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, we had a bigger goal in mind: Raising money to stop Big Oil’s attempt to overturn California’s SB1137, the landmark law that shields our communities from harmful oil drilling.

Politico: This is Fonda's fight

If you haven’t heard about it yet, here’s the gist: California passed a historic bill in 2022 that prohibits new oil wells within 3,200 feet of homes, schools, and other sensitive areas in our communities. It protects our children and families from the harms of close-range oil extraction. Despite clear public support, this legislation is now under threat from the Oil and Gas industry.

They've launched a well-funded referendum to repeal this vital law in November, and they’re spending millions to mislead the public into believing these regulations are an overreach.

Our event highlighted the disproportionate impact of urban oil wells on low-income communities and communities of color — those who are often overlooked but bear the brunt of environmental injustices. This issue isn't about aesthetics or discomfort; it's about preventing real health hazards like respiratory and neurological diseases linked to proximity to oil wells.

Thanks to the overwhelming support we received at the event, we're off to a strong start. But let's be clear: Big Oil and Gas have virtually UNLIMITED sums of money to spend against us to protect their bottom line. So, this fight is far from over. Between now and November, Jane PAC will be ramping up our efforts to fight back against the referendum campaign and elect climate champions to the state legislature who will keep up the fight in Sacramento for years to come. Please, make a donation today to support our work.

Here's where we need to focus our efforts:

  • Educational Outreach: We need resources to inform the public about the dangers associated with nearby oil drilling through mailers, phone calls, social media, emails, texts, and in-person outreach — and in a state as diverse as California, we’ll need to invest in multilingual outreach. Disinformation is a potent tool in Big Oil's arsenal, but truth is more powerful.

  • Legislative Advocacy: Supporting candidates who champion environmental justice is more crucial than ever. Your contributions to the Jane Fonda Climate PAC will allow us to support more down-ballot candidates who prioritize public health over fossil fuel profits.

  • Community Engagement: We have to amplify the voices of those directly impacted by oil drilling. While the climate crisis caused by continued reliance on fossil fuels impacts all of us, people in frontline communities are bearing the brunt of these deadly extraction projects. Their stories underscore the urgent need for critical measures like the one CA passed in 2022. For first-person stories you can share on social media, click here to access the toolkit.

We’re gearing up for a November showdown against Big Oil, and every action you take counts. Please John, if you've ever felt moved by our cause, let this be the moment you act. Chip in, join us, and let's show the oil industry that their era of unchecked power is over.
