Dear Friends,

I hope you're having a wonderful week. As part of our ongoing series, "The People's Congress," I want to keep you informed about the rhythms and routines of Congress.
This Week in Congress: Understanding the Recess Period

This week, the House is officially in recess. While the term "recess" might bring to mind a break or a pause, in Congress, it signifies a vital part of the legislative duties known as the District Work Period. During this time, there are no votes or official sessions in the Capitol. Instead, Members of Congress return to their home districts. This period is supposed to be dedicated to engaging directly with you, the constituents, and addressing your concerns and needs. However, for Members like Jimmy Gomez, it is a time used for courting wealthy donors and setting up meetings with special interest groups.
What Happens During a Congressional Recess?
1. Constituent Engagement: Members of Congress return to their home districts to engage directly with their constituents through town halls, meetings, and local events. This is a time for them to gather valuable feedback and understand the concerns and needs of the people they represent.

2. Local Oversight: They also monitor the progress of local projects and the implementation of federal policies, ensuring that the community's needs are being effectively met. Are there issues in our district where follow-up is missing? Or have never been addressed? Your representative is supposed to be responsive to the community’s needs.

3. Constituent Services: The local offices remain active, assisting residents with various federal issues such as Social Security, immigration, and veterans' benefits. Were you aware of this potential for assistance?

4. Legislative Planning: What your representative learns from you and other constituents during this period should help guide their priorities and actions once they return to Washington. Recess is a time for reflection and strategic planning, taking into account the voices of the community.

My Commitment to You:

While I am not yet a Member of Congress, I am committed to understanding and explaining these processes so that you can better engage with and influence your current and future representatives. Knowing when and how to share your views during these periods can significantly impact the decisions made when Congress is in session.

Get Involved:

I encourage you to participate in local events and reach out to your representatives during this recess. Your involvement is essential for a responsive and effective government.

Thank you for your engagement and support. Together, we can ensure our community's voice is heard loud and clear in the halls of Congress.

Warm regards,
David Kim
Candidate for Congress, CA-34
