Our campaigning is working!

SPUC supporter,
Since last autumn, we have been fighting against attempts to decriminalise abortion through amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill. Pro-abortion MPs Diana Johnson and Stella Creasy have been tabling and re-tabling amendments at different stages to push their extreme agenda.

Thousands of you have been writing to your MPs, and many of you have been meeting with them in person. Your financial support has also allowed SPUC to run a very successful advertising campaign on several prominent political websites.

And this campaigning is working. Responses back from MPs show that many, even those who do not generally vote with the pro-life lobby are horrified at the idea of DIY abortion up to birth being legalised. Several Conservative MPs have made it clear that they would vote against the whole bill rather than let it go through with such a thing included.

Yesterday, we had the clearest indication yet that the Government are seriously worried about this. The Home Secretary, James Cleverly, spoke out against including any abortion related amendments into the bill.

Despite professing himself to be pro-choice, he said that "This is not the kind of bill where we should have something like this," and that the bill was being used as a "bit of a Christmas tree" and "lots of things are being hung on it".

He also questioned whether the Bill was the “right vehicle” for MPs to discuss such an emotive topic, admitting it was likely to be a “short and slightly rushed debate” ahead of a “whipped” vote, where MPs vote on party lines.

Mr Cleverly said: “It’s a government bill and it will be whipped as a government bill and if you have abortion rights clauses in it, then suddenly we’re breaking that long-standing and successful convention of not whipping abortion-related legislation.”

It will be up to the Speaker to chose which clauses are chosen for debate. But the Home Secretary taking this stance is a really positive sign. Also positive is how annoyed BPAS are!
However, they are not going to give up campaigning on this, and nor can we. We need to keep up the pressure on MPs to oppose these amendments. As Mr Cleverly’s remarks show, it really makes a difference!
