Prayer Thought

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven." (Ecclesiastes 3:1) My family life marks another significant season. It's hard to believe that my youngest child will turn 18 in May and graduate from high school. My wife and I are trying to participate in his school activities, events and senior celebrations as much as possible, knowing that these moments will not return. Each day in May feels like the conclusion of a season for our family.

As we are aware, the United Methodist Church is in a series of significant changes. The General Conference appears to mark the end of one season and the beginning of a new era for the denomination. I feel “It's a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to let go, a time to hold on and a time to release, a time to tear down and a time to rebuild.” My hope is that the ultimate aim of this change is to deepen our capacity to love, making our love for our neighbor as well as God the focal point of our spiritual practice, transcending personal theological positions.

Enabling us to navigate these changes together, I seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my breath prayers. As I inhale, I contemplate “The church may be transformed.” As I exhale, I silently affirm that “God's love is constant.”

Amen.
