VIDEO OF THE DAY: Bombshell update at US Supreme Court
Trump's lawyers pulled out all the stops to make their case that Trump deserves absolute immunity for anything he said or does — including hypothetically assassinating his political rivals. While the liberal justices were rightfully horrified by this, the conservative justices were willing to hear him out, and even signalled that perhaps they need to send the case back to the lower courts to further delay Trump's prosecution — which could be the lifeline he needs to draw things out until its too late.

NY Times' obsession with Biden's age retribution for refusing a sit-down interview, says Times journo
If you've been wondering why the New York Times has been so determined to constantly bring up President Biden's age — with all the implications that accompany it — it turns out there is a reason, and it's because publisher A.G. Sulzberger is mad at the White House for not giving him a sit-down interview. Yes, you read that right. One of the most influential and prestigious newspapers in the WORLD is biased in its coverage against the sitting president and is undermining his public perception due to a petty grudge held by the oligarch that runs it. “All these Biden people think that the problem is Peter Baker or whatever reporter they’re mad at that day,” one Times journalist said. “It’s A.G. He’s the one who is pissed [that] Biden hasn’t done any interviews and quietly encourages all the tough reporting on his age.” The Times has vehemently denied this, but the evidence is clear — it's right there in the newspaper! Need we remind A.G. Sulzberger that our literal democracy and possibly the future of the world's ecosystems are at stake?

Lead Locally candidate scores HUGE win
Lead Locally: The state of Oregon will soon be divesting ALL of its investment in dirty, climate-polluting coal — all thanks to a candidate who rode a Lead Locally endorsement to legislative office! It’s a great reminder of just how much change bottom-of-the-ballot candidates can achieve, and how important it is we keep electing climate champions to guide us to a greener future. Will you chip in to help Lead Locally elect the next generation of progressive leaders?
Police deploy brutality and violence against protesting students, faculty in appalling show of fascistic repression
Atlanta cops unleashed a vicious crackdown against students at Emory University, with videos showing one student — a Black student, of course — being held down by three officers and repeatedly shocked with a taser, and another truly horrifying video showing the cops brutally hurl Emory economics Professor Caroline Fohlin to the ground and twist her arm, all because she had the gall to ask "what are you doing?" To add outrageous injustice to injury, Professor Fohlin was jailed for 11 hours and charged with "simple battery against a police officer," showing how easily cops simply invent crimes on a whim to justify their actions. Mass arrests and repression continued to unfold across the country as more and more campuses erupt in protest of the inhumane violence the Israeli military is inflicting on the people of Gaza — and now in protest of the violence being deployed against peaceful protestors here at home.

New York appeals court overturns Harvey Weinstein’s sex crimes conviction and orders a new trial
The New York Court of Appeals overturned disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein's New York sex crimes conviction on account of the "prior bad acts” witnesses, which they believe should not have been allowed to testify. “The witnesses were there just to make Harvey Weinstein look bad" bragged his lawyer after the decision. Those witnesses were Weinstein's sexual assault victims and the case was about the sexual assaults he'd committed, but the majority of the court felt that they "served only to establish defendant’s propensity to commit the crimes charged.” Dissenting Judge Madeline Singas disagreed, writing that the majority opinion “perpetuates outdated notions of sexual violence and allows predators to escape accountability...“This conclusion deprives juries of the context necessary to do their work, forecloses the prosecution from using an essential tool to prove intent, ignores the nuances of how sexual violence is perpetrated and perceived, and demonstrates the majority’s utter lack of understanding of the dynamics of sexual assault.” Thankfully, Weinstein is unlikely to be released from prison, because he was also sentenced to 16 years in a Los Angeles court for charges of rape and sexual assault, but the overturned conviction is still a stinging blow to his victims and to the MeToo movement in general — and his Los Angeles conviction is also under appeal.

Trump: Charlottesville rally was a "little peanut" compared to pro-Palestinian protests
Speaking from outside the courtroom, Trump once again downplayed the appalling "Unite the Right" neo-Nazi rally in Virginia where a white supremacist murdered antifascist protester Heather Heyer and a mob of white supremacists chanted "Jews will not replace us." His comments are nothing new, but they do serve as a timely reminder that the police did not treat the neo-Nazi marchers with any of the repression and violence they're deploying against college students protesting for peace and human rights or the Black Lives Matter protestors in 2020. Wonder why that is.
US won’t sanction IDF units for alleged West Bank rights abuses
The Biden administration has decided not to proceed with the sanctions it has been considering against Israeli military and police units, including the notoriously violent Netzah Yehuda Battalion, which the State Department has determined to have committed "gross human rights violations" against Palestinians. Their stated rationale? The violations occurred before Israel's war in Gaza began. Netzah Yehuda is accused of torture, physical assault, sexual assault, and shooting and killing unarmed civilians, and will soon be receiving US military aid.

ByteDance prefers TikTok shutdown in US if legal options fail, sources say
170 million Americans may be forced to find something else to do with their time as TikTok’s Chinese parent company signaled unwillingness to give up key algorithms to prospective American buyers — one of whom is former Trump Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. Can you blame them?

Ex-athletic director arrested for framing principal with AI-generated voice
Audio that appeared to show Principal Eric Eiswert of Pikesville High School making racist and anti-Semitic comments turns out to have been the work of the school's former athletics director, Dazhon Darien, who used AI to mimic Eiswert's voice and posted the clips to social media in order to smear him after the principal investigated him for financial misconduct. “The audio clip ... had profound repercussions,” police wrote in charging documents. “It not only led to Eiswert’s temporary removal from the school but also triggered a wave of hate-filled messages on social media and numerous calls to the school. The recording also caused significant disruptions for the PHS staff and students.” Darien has been arrested and the case put to rest, but it's a sharp reminder of just how much chaos that AI-generated voice and images can create — and how we need federal regulation to be passed ASAP.
