Public Works crews will start flushing fire hydrants on May 1 and continue through May 31.
Look for signs at the entrance to your neighborhood. On days that crews are in your neighborhood, finish your laundry before 7 a.m. or begin after 6 p.m. to avoid clothing discoloration.
Why release all of that water into the streets? Flushing cleans water mains by running high flows of water through fire hydrants to get rid of iron deposits that can produce discolored water and possibly damage water meters. Flushing also helps deliver fresh water to dead-end water mains.
