John,
Students across the country are bravely standing up to genocide and demanding their universities divest from arms dealers enabling the violence in Gaza. As a result, the GOP and AIPAC-backed members of the Democratic Party are pushing university administrations to suspend and arrest their students for exercising their right to free speech. It’s an appalling example of history repeating itself.
This week, Justice Democrats incumbent and Squad member Rep. Ilhan Omar — whose daughter was suspended for participating in a peaceful pro-Palestinian protest at Columbia University the day after Ilhan questioned the University’s president — spoke to student protestors at the University of Minnesota, and was promptly attacked for it.
Republican House Majority Whip Tom Emmer posted these disgustingly Islamophobic comments about Ilhan yesterday:
Protesting genocide and the suffering of innocent people in Gaza is not anti-semitic or pro-Hamas, but Republicans like Emmer and AIPAC-funded establishment Democrats want us to think otherwise as they continue to use our tax dollars to send billions of unconditional aid to Netanyahu’s military.
Ilhan is keeping up the fight for human rights both here and abroad, but she faces a serious threat to her House seat in this August’s primary election as AIPAC’s super PAC threatens to spend $100 million to unseat the Squad.
Ilhan has faced Islamophobic, racist attacks like this before — but it won’t stop her from standing on the right side of history and fighting for our shared progressive values.
Let’s show her that she has the support of the people and ensure she has the resources necessary to defeat her AIPAC-backed challenger on August 13th.
In solidarity,
Geoff Simpson
