“We know this is a difficult time for all Americans, and we want your safety and that of your loved ones to come first. We understand if you are unable to contribute, we want you on our team no matter what. Thank you!”

John, this is infuriating.

A recent study by FAIR Health, an independent nonprofit, found that uninsured Americans could pay up to $75,000 in medical bills if hospitalized for coronavirus.

At the same time, a report estimated 3.5 million people likely lost their employer-provided health insurance in the last two weeks alone.

That means working people could lose their jobs, their health insurance, then be saddled with huge amounts of medical debt during one of the worst public health and economic crises with barely any safety net.

Sadly, this reality isn’t new in America. We’ve all heard stories of people rationing insulin because they couldn’t afford it every month or parents buried under so much medical debt that they can barely feed their children.

This crisis is just highlighting what we already knew — our healthcare system is morally and structurally broken. Help us fight for a system that treats healthcare as a human right by supporting us today.

It didn’t get this way by accident. For decades, private health care companies have spent millions lobbying members of Congress and donating to their political campaigns for one reason — to protect their bottom line. And it works. Those same companies have seen record profits of $100 billion a year.

Greed, not health, is the driving force behind our “healthcare” system. To truly get to the root of the problem, we must change who we elect to office.

This is a political moment. Nurses and grocery store employees are risking their lives every day. Hospitals are running out of hospital beds and ventilators. Morgues are overflowing. Regular people are suffering because our leadership is failing.

We need to fight like our lives depend on it because lives do depend on it.

And if our leaders don’t have the courage to fight for it, we need to elect people who do.
