The climate crisis is getting worse before our eyes. Every year, fires, floods, hurricanes, and heat waves become more deadly. Unfortunately, this summer will be no exception.

When disasters strike, politicians often fly in for a photo-op handing out supplies. The media has wall-to-wall coverage for a few days. And nearly every time, the people responsible for the crisis, cowardly politicians and the fossil fuel industry, get off the hook.

We’re going to make sure it’s different this summer. We’re training thousands of young people around the country to know how to respond when disaster strikes: supporting local relief efforts and turning up the heat on politicians to demand they act so that these disasters don’t get worse.

Last week, we held a weekend-long training session in Los Angeles for 60 Sunrise leaders from the West and Southwest. People processed together what it’s been like to see the climate crisis wreak havoc on their communities. We practiced making art and telling our stories. We talked about how to stay safe while taking bold action after a disaster.

And we got to planning for the summer and fall when Phoenix will probably again experience record heat, and wildfires threaten lives and livelihoods in California.
