Addressing Serious Mental Illness During Pregnancy

Serious mental illness (SMI) includes conditions like major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. 

Women living with SMI are more likely to experience pregnancy complications and parenting challenges related to psychiatric symptoms and treatment.

In the April Perinatal Mental Health & Well-being issue, Karissa Fenwick of the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and coauthors explore perspectives of reproductive-age female patients living with SMI.

Through a series of interviews, the researchers find “critical gaps in information, support, and resources related to pregnancy planning, the potential teratogenicity of psychotropic medication, and parenting in mental health services.”

To address these gaps, Fenwick and coauthors recommend increased training and education on reproductive health, pregnancy, and parenting for mental health providers.
