The Seattle Times: “Abortion access in WA isn't a sure thing…”

After the despicable court ruling in Arizona, it's clear that our abortion rights are far from protected. We cannot let these attacks go unanswered.

When the Republican-aligned Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade , we knew it was just the beginning of more attacks to come on our abortion rights.

Since then, Republicans have led attacks in states across the nation, all with the sole intention of banning our abortion rights once and for all. We saw it in Alabama, where Republicans allowed the future of IVF to hang in the balance, and we saw it just recently in Arizona, where Republican courts allowed a near-total abortion ban from the year 1864 to come back as law.

Now, the Seattle Times is reporting that our abortion rights are still in jeopardy, even in blue states like Washington. An 1873 law, called the Comstock Act, could be the latest in old laws being revived to allow Republicans control of our bodies.

We cannot remain silent as Republicans chip away at our abortion rights. As one of just two pro-choice doctors in Congress, Kim is doing her part to protect our rights to reproductive care, but she can't do it alone. The Comstock Act was a federal law that stopped the shipping of any materials that were deemed lascivious, indecent, or vile – specifically calling out the prohibition of mailing any items related to abortion procedures. Laws like this one were canceled out by the enactment of Roe v. Wade, yet with Roe overturned, these archaic laws will continue to come back to light as a means to further restrict abortion access.

It has never been more clear that we cannot sit idly by, hoping these Republican attacks don't reach our own Washington State. We must take action right now before it's too late.

Kim is in Congress pushing for legislation that will codify Roe, protecting the right to abortion in every state once again. But the Republican majority stands in her way.
