California legislators unanimously approve bill to protect children from porn

History is being made in California!

Last week, California legislators unanimously passed AB 3080 in its first committee hearing. If fully passed, this bill would require porn sites to verify the age of its site visitors, using ID or other strong verification methods, to keep children from being exposed to this life-altering content.

This breakthrough is especially meaningful because California is our home state and what passes in California can have a strong influence on legislation in the rest of the nation.

The bill now goes to the Committee on Judiciary for its next hearing, scheduled for April 30.

If AB 3080 goes through, it will help protect California’s nine million children from early porn exposure, which is tied to addiction, depression, violence, self-loathing, and an increased likelihood of committing sexual assault and rape.

We’ve been advocating for this legislation since 2021, through our Protect Children Not Porn campaign ([link removed]) , because we’ve seen firsthand how underage exposure to porn fuels trafficking and sexual exploitation.

I attended the hearing for the bill in person and gave an endorsement of support for it, among our other allies in the fight.

Pediatric sexual assault nurse examiner Heidi Olson, who we featured in our film Raised on Porn, shared at the hearing, “A really disturbing trend that we’re seeing… is that the age range most likely to commit sexual assaults right now are 11-15 year-old males… There’s a clear connection between repeated exposure to pornography and child-on-child sexual assault.”

As Olson’s statement reveals, the stakes are high for this bill. Although we’re off to an incredible start with the unanimous passing, AB 3080 still needs to pass the Committee on Judiciary in order to move forward, and our team is actively mobilizing support for it.

When we began the Protect Children Not Porn campaign in 2021, there were no states with laws in place requiring age verification on porn sites. As of today, 14 states have passed age verification legislation and another 24 have introduced it!
