John,
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)–which provides nutrition assistance for households with low incomes–is the most effective hunger relief program in the country, helping people afford the food they need when times are tough.
House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA) is expected to release his farm bill within the next few weeks, and reports are saying that the bill would freeze the cost of SNAP food benefits, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates would result in a roughly $30 billion cut in SNAP’s food assistance over the next decade.1
More than 40 million people participate in SNAP each month and each of them will be affected if these cuts are allowed to go into effect. We cannot allow Congress to enact such cruelty on vulnerable populations. Add your name to the petition to tell Congress to strengthen SNAP in the farm bill, not cut it.

According to analysis from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the cuts in SNAP would be equal to one day's worth of benefits each month, leading up to two days worth of benefits by 2031. A $30 billion cut over the 2027-2033 period would result in:2
-
An $18 billion cut in benefits to households with children, which would affect 17 million children per month.
-
A $9 billion cut to households with children under the age of 5; affecting about 5 million children per month.
-
A $5 billion cut to households with adults age 60 and over; affecting 6 million seniors per month.
-
A $6 billion cut to households with people with disabilities; affecting 4 million disabled people per month.
-
An $11 billion cut to working families and households.
SNAP is not only our most effective anti-hunger program, it plays a crucial role in helping to reduce poverty, improves health and economic outcomes, is linked to better education outcomes and self-sufficiency[4], and plays an important role in rural communities.
It’s crucial that the House Agriculture Committee not only fights back against these proposed cuts, but fights to strengthen SNAP for millions of families who rely on it.
