Moments after Governor Tony Evers suspended in-person voting tomorrow and sought to reschedule the spring election for June 9, Republican legislative leaders asked the state Supreme Court to block the governor's order. The high court sided with legislative Republicans and ruled that tomorrow's in-person voting should go forward.

This is incredibly irresponsible, and creates even more chaos, but all of this is also playing out in a way that is eerily similar to what happened in Ohio. The governor there moved to postpone the election, the state's highest court ruled he couldn't do that, and then Ohio's highest ranking health official (the secretary of the state's health department) stepped in and ordered a postponement of the election there because of the obvious health hazards.

Mayors here in Wisconsin have been asking our state's Department of Health Services Secretary-designee Andrea Palm to do the same thing here that was done in Ohio to prevent unnecessary exposure to COVID-19.

It's worth a shot. Lives are at stake. The number to call is 608-266-9622. The message is simple. Do what your counterpart in Ohio did.

Short of intervention by a federal court, this is the one remaining hope for common sense to prevail.
