Dear John,

In a few weeks, we’ll host our annual Women of Vision Awards, where we will celebrate groundbreaking grantee partners and feminist leaders who are empowering others, galvanizing communities, and driving change. Our theme for this year’s event is “Seeding Solidarity and Sisterhood,” and I’ve been thinking on the idea of “seeding.”

So much of what we do at the Ms. Foundation requires working today for results we may not see tomorrow, or this month, or this year. We’re not just moving money to the field – we’re helping grassroots organizations remain healthy, stable, and effective by providing more than financial assistance. We help form strategic connections between groups for a greater impact, organizational fundraising, stronger infrastructure, and more. We’re funding our partners’ work, but we’re also funding their rest, so they don’t burn out and can dream longer-term. President and CEO Teresa C. Younger recently penned a piece for Candid on exactly how we do this – read it now!

When we strengthen organizations on the ground, we are seeding the groundwork for vibrant movements that have real impact on the lives of women and communities far into the future.

In solidarity,

Ms. Foundation in the News

"There is intentionality in all that the Ms. Foundation does, including our calls for funding proposals and how organizations are invited to apply. We strive to be clear and transparent about organizations’ eligibility upfront before folks apply, as we want to be as respectful of the time it may take to apply and know that smaller organizations have limited staff who already are juggling many roles and responsibilities."

In a new piece for Candid (formerly Philanthropy News Digest) President and CEO Teresa C. Younger shares why building grassroots organizations' capacity is central to our mission. We do this by:

  • Prioritizing women- and people of color-led grassroots organizations.
  • Building grassroots capacity to address underlying causes of injustices.
  • Building funder-grassroots relationships.

Blog Spotlight: Centro Unido Latino Americano

In rural North Carolina, grantee partner Centro Unido Latino Americano is bridging barriers and creating programs to improve language accessibility, food security, and access to healthcare. Recently, the group brought a Latinx mural to McDowell County for the first time, which serves as a visual representation of their immigrant community and the impact they have on the United States.

Black Maternal Health Week

Held annually April 11-17, Black Maternal Health Week is a week of awareness, activism, and community-building aimed at amplifying the voices of Black mothers and birthing people, bringing visibility to Black-led maternal health initiatives, and centering the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements.

The campaign is founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. If you want to take action beyond this campaign, you can learn more about and support organizations centering Black maternal health in your neighborhood.
