GCHD Recommends Caution Following CDC Alert on Botulinum Toxin Injections

GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas— In response to the recent alert by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding counterfeit or mishandled botulinum toxin injections, the Galveston County Health District (GCHD) is informing citizens to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to maintain their health. 

The CDC has reported an alarming increase in botulism cases across California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York City, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, due to counterfeit or mishandled Botulinum Toxin Injections. These adverse reactions prompted immediate medical attention and coordinated efforts to prevent them from worsening. Botulism, a rare but serious illness caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, can lead to paralysis and potentially life-threatening complications if left untreated. 

According to the CDC's Health Alert Network (HAN) message HAN00507, the reported clusters have been linked to improper procurement and administration of botulinum toxin and affect individuals who have been administered botulinum toxin injections by unlicensed or untrained individuals or in non-healthcare settings, including homes or spas. Symptoms of botulism include blurred or double vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, and paralysis. It is imperative for individuals experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.

Botulinum toxin should be administered only by licensed providers, using only recommended doses of FDA-approved toxin, preferably in a licensed or accredited healthcare setting. Providers should be trained in the proper administration of botulinum toxin and practice in accordance with state and local requirements. 

Dr. Philip Keiser, CEO and Local Health Authority at Galveston County Health District emphasizes the importance of awareness and precautionary measures considering the current situation. "Botulism is a serious illness that requires prompt medical intervention. We urge the public to exercise caution and refrain from receiving injections with counterfeit or improperly stored products or injections administered by unlicensed or untrained individuals.”
