Councils in Crisis - Brum Rise Up
You may have seen the coverage of the devastating cuts which are planned in Birmingham, in response to the council effectively declaring itself bankrupt in September last year. These cuts will have huge consequences for SEND provision, library services, the arts and youth services.
It’s not just Birmingham City Council facing catastrophic cuts. In March, Nottingham city councillors voted through cuts to jobs & services as a result of a £53m budget gap. Plans include hundreds of job losses & cuts to care, arts, libraries & youth services
We're seeing the same story all over the country. A Local Government Association survey found that one in five council leaders in England think it is very or fairly likely that they will need to issue a Section 114 (bankruptcy) notice this year or next.
This Saturday, the 27th April, Birmingham People's Assembly is hosting a campaign and organising meeting, which will bring together unions and local campaigning organisations to plan the fight to keep vital services and resources in Brum. The next stage in the campaign to save vital services and cultural resources in Birmingham takes place on Monday 6th May (May Bank Holiday Monday). Demand an end to the cuts. Join the Rally outside the Central Library, Centenary Square at 12pm.
