Dear CSSJ Member,
I'm reaching out with some exciting news that I couldn't wait to share. On Thursday, April 25th, the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) will honor me with the 2024 Survivor Voices Award at the 2024 Crime Victim Service Awards as part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.
The Survivor Voices award recognizes crime victims and survivors whose perseverance or determination in the aftermath of a victimization was the catalyst for implementing an innovative program, shifting an existing program in a new direction, or changing policies or practices that prevent survivors from accessing services or pursuing justice.
Since recovering from my shooting in 2009, I dedicated my life to organizing, training, and advocating for a justice system that prioritizes healing, prevention, and recovery.
This award is not just about me—it's about all of the survivors who inspire me every day to help heal communities. It would mean so much to have our CSSJ community watching the ceremony. This isn't just my award—it's ours. Here's the information you need to watch it:
Date: Thursday, April 25, 2025
Time: 3:00 - 5:00pm ET / 2:00 - 4:00pm CT / 12:00 - 2:00pm PT
Live Stream Link: ovc.ojp.gov/live
Please feel free to invite anyone else you think might be interested. Let's make this a memorable moment for all of us. Thank you for being part of our community, and I can’t wait to accept this award on behalf of Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice.
Onward together,
Aswad Thomas
