Dear Friend,

We are in a fight for the soul of America.

Sixty years ago, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 made three promises:

  •  A more abiding commitment to freedom.
  •  A more constant pursuit of justice.
  •  A deeper respect for human dignity.

Doors were opened because of it, and the lives of Black Americans improved. But the promise of full equality, as this year’s Equity Index indicates, is still elusive. Black Americans are still only receiving 75.7% of the whole pie compared to whites.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of that landmark legislation, but the journey toward racial justice is nowhere near complete. Sixty years later, Black Americans are still not receiving their fair share of economic, health, education, social justice, and civic engagement opportunities. That is not acceptable. And it gets worse.

We must worry as political forces are working to gut the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through the courts and the ballot box. That will further diminish the rights that Black Americans have worked hard to achieve. We must fight back.

Dear Friend, we will fight for equality but need your renewed support to keep the fight going. Your gift now says you care about a safe, equitable future for your generation and the next.

We must rise up on behalf of our communities. As the largest historic civil rights and urban advocacy, direct services organization supporters like you have the power to create the changes minorities need and deserve.

While we fight hard in the courts and halls of government, we also help millions of people one at a time – people like Joe, a Black American who repeatedly was denied computer jobs, although he was a capable candidate. Joe was empowered with the resume and interviewing skills he needed, as well as the training and guidance free of charge, all from his local Urban League.

Now, Joe has a job with benefits and room to move up the ladder in his chosen field. That is the difference you make through your support. We would not let the system deny this hardworking man what he deserves.

Please give us the strength to protect the freedoms, justice, and respect for human dignity that forces want to strip away. Renew your support today. Your gift amplifies the voices of Black America and protects and preserves our rights.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment and standing with us today.

With gratitude,

Marc H. Morial

President and Chief Executive Officer
