In Latest Minnesota Stop for Biden Campaign, First Lady Urges Allies to ‘Meet This Moment’

First Lady Jill Biden kept the campaign focus Friday on reproductive issues and highlighted the Democratic president’s plans on education as she made a pair of Minnesota stops. The evening events, both in Bloomington, are part of a broader push by the Biden campaign to shore up a state crucial to his reelection effort. Minnesota went for Biden by 7 percentage points over then-Republican President Donald Trump in 2020, but recent polls show a tighter race is shaping up in their rematch here.
As part of the trip, Biden spoke at a Women for Biden-Harris event at a brewery.
“Four years ago, Trump thought that he could flip Minnesota. They poured in their resources and they held rallies,” Jill Biden said to a crowd of about 150. “They thought that they could out organize all of you, but you proved them wrong.”

Two New Justices will Create Female Majority on Minnesota Supreme Court
[[link removed]]
Gov. Tim Walz appointed two women to the state Supreme Court on Monday, returning the court to a female majority for the first time since 1994.
Court of Appeals Judge Theodora Gaïtas and Stearns County Chief Judge Sarah Hennesy will fill the seats held by retiring Justices Margaret Chutich and G. Barry Anderson, respectively. Both new justices have extensive experience in aiding lower-income citizens with criminal, appellate and civil matters.
Walz conducted interviews with six finalists last week. All were notified of his choices Sunday. The selections mean that Walz has appointed four of the seven justices on the court. When Anderson steps down next month, all seven justices will have been appointed by a DFL governor.

Anoka-Hennepin School Board Member Threatens Budget Standoff Over Racial, Gender Equity Efforts
[[link removed]]
An Anoka-Hennepin school board member backed by a conservative parents rights group says he plans to force a budget showdown if the district does not scrap programs aimed at racial and gender equity. Matt Audette wrote in an April 12 Facebook post that he would not vote for any budget that included the “spreading of divisive, one-sided views.”
But officials at the north metro school district say many of these programs are required by law, and eliminating them could imperil the district’s funding and students’ ability to graduate. Audette won election in 2021 with support of the 1776 Project PAC, which opposes diversity, equity, and inclusion in public schools. He said that he and school board members Zach Arco and Linda Hoekman, who both won election last fall with the backing of the conservative Minnesota Parents Alliance, had developed a list of items they would not fund. Minnesota school board candidates supported by parents’ rights groups lost most of their races over the last several years. But since the Anoka-Hennepin school board has six members, this bloc of three now comprises half the board.
