Office of the Texas Governor, Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities
April 2024 is Fair Housing Month

A place to call home is a big part of the American dream, and fair-housing laws help make that dream come true. This year marks the 56th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act. This landmark legislation ensures Americans have equal access to housing of their choice free from discrimination.

The Fair Housing Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968. This landmark civil rights legislation made discrimination in housing transactions unlawful. The Act prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation), disability, and familial status. Amendments to the act in 1988 brought within its protective embrace two additional groups: families with children and persons with physical or mental disabilities.

This year?s Fair Housing Month theme is?"?Fair Housing: The ?Act? in Action.?"? Activities and materials to support awareness of fair housing [ [link removed] ] may be accessed on the website for the office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity.

The leading state agencies on Fair Housing are the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) and Texas Workforce Commission ? Civil Rights Division (TWC). TDHCA has created Fair Housing initiatives and resources [ [link removed] ] for the public and TWC provides several services on Fair Housing including a monthly webinar [ [link removed] ].

Many Americans are ?living the dream? and enjoying the home of their choice. Others may have the goal of finding that home. Everyone should take advantage of resources made available in conjunction with Fair Housing Month and move toward the day when all citizens have a safe and comfortable home.

Governor Greg Abbott has issued a Proclamation [ [link removed] ] for Fair Housing Month, April 2024. He offers this support for Fair Housing.??I encourage all Texans to support fair housing practices so that we can build a more prosperous future for Texas and everyone who calls it home."
