In the April Perinatal Mental Health & Well-Being issue, Kara Zivin of the University of Michigan and coauthors examine trends in perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD) diagnoses among privately insured people between 2008–2020.

The researchers conclude that PMAD diagnoses increased by 93.3 percent during this period.

While perinatal people in all age, race/ethnicity, and geographic categories experienced an increase in PMAD diagnoses from the pre- to post-ACA era, Black people saw the largest increase.

Zivin and coauthors conclude that these trends “aligned with maternal health improvement efforts,” including increased coverage of maternity and preventive services, and suggest that these increases could also reflect greater illness awareness.
