Friend,
Just hours ago, President Biden signed legislation approving $17 billion in unconditional military aid for Israel — money that will allow Benjamin Netanyahu to further escalate his vicious assault on the people of Gaza, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, including at least 14,000 children.
While the world is calling out for an end to the bloodshed and genocidal onslaught, the U.S. government has decided to pour gasoline on the fire.
But to hear corporate media in the U.S. tell it, this legislation is a bipartisan victory representing the very best of American leadership in the world. The U.S. is directly funding the killing and mass starvation of an entire people, and this is what CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, and the rest of the corporate media want us to celebrate as one of Biden's crowning achievements.
Let's be clear: Congress could have imposed restrictions on how this massive new cache of bombs, planes, guns, and bullets can be used. They could have required Israel not to use weapons paid for with U.S. tax dollars for war crimes, to bomb hospitals, or attack refugee camps. The Senate refused even to allow a vote on any such restrictions.
In the weeks and months to come, Common Dreams will continue to report on Netanyahu's brutalization of Gaza and track how this new influx of weapons is used to kill and starve the Palestinian people — and we're counting on your support to make this vital reporting possible.
