Doniphan UMC Building Destroyed by Fire
The United Methodist Church building in Doniphan burned down early this morning. The church building, one of the oldest structures in town, was a total loss. Doniphan Fire Chief Brian Byrd said the cause of the fire is undetermined, but with an historic structure involving multiple additions of various ages it was likely an electrical issue. Doniphan UMC is very engaged in its community, providing hundreds of coats each year for people in need, hosting a free Christmas dinner open to everyone, and assistance to unhoused people in the area. Kent Wilfong said the outpouring of support from the community today has been phenomenal, with many churches offering them their sanctuaries for the interim. This Sunday they will worship at the Christian Church. Wilfong said he has faith that the Doniphan UMC has a strong future ahead. &quot;We&#39;re just going to give it over to God,&quot; he said.
Bishop Urges &#39;Spirit of Hope&#39;
In the opening worship service for the postponed 2020 United Methodist General Conference, Council of Bishops President Thomas J. Bickerton encouraged delegates to embrace a &ldquo;spirit of hope&rdquo; and commit to the revitalization of The United Methodist Church. Bickerton, who leads the New York Episcopal Area, declared this General Conference a seminal moment. &ldquo;It is time to move forward as a denomination with new purpose and energy,&rdquo; he said. Vigil Calls Denomination to Creation Care
More than 200 people, including delegates and observers in town for General Conference, gathered April 22 at First United Methodist Church for a candlelight Vigil for Creation to mark Earth Day and to call the denomination to greater stewardship of creation.
