You read that right: States with Republican legislatures are passing bills that aim to restrict which books libraries can offer — and threaten librarians with PRISON or thousands of dollars in fines for handing out certain books.
At least 27 states are considering such bills this year, three of which have already become law — adding to nearly a dozen similar measures over the last few years.”
It’s disgusting that our country is heading in a direction where we are normalizing book bans and prosecuting librarians — and we should be fighting back against this worrying trend in every single way we can.
What does all this mean here in VA?
Well, Virginia is a classic purple battleground state. We’ve got a Republican governor, and our state legislature often flips back and forth between Democratic and GOP control — so every single election really matters when it comes to keeping VA safe from absurd policies like jailing librarians.
But even with the current Democratic majorities in our legislature, these issues are in play. In fact, just last month GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin actually VETOED a bill that the legislature passed to prevent school book bans!
We need to fight tooth and nail in EVERY election to keep VA blue and make sure we elect and reelect Democrats who will fight against this ridiculousness.
Right now, that means making sure we send Tim Kaine back to the Senate — and with Trump and national MAGA Republicans determined to flip VA, we know we’ll have a battle ahead of us.
So we have to ask: Will you chip in ANY amount to reelect Tim Kaine, keep VA blue, and defeat the MAGA movement?
