Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are thinking about you and the vital work that you do during these incredibly challenging times. In addition to the physical and economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic, the policy opportunities and challenges are popping up quickly. We’re hard at work to keep you in the loop on developments that will impact your advocacy, and creating new resources (see more below) on everything from elections to the census during a public health crisis.

In the midst of this, we at Alliance for Justice are especially disturbed by the rising incidents of hate and racial discrimination against Asians and Asian Americans around the US in reaction to the novel coronavirus. We extend our solidarity and support to all those who have been or are affected by this xenophobia. Please know that our team is ready to help you and your partners advocate for an end to this racism and to achieve your policy goals.

To reach us, please call 866-NP-LOBBY (866-675-6229) or email [email protected].

We value your work and our partnership, and are here to support you.

Stay well and healthy.

Is My Organization Eligible for Relief from the CARES Act?

The recently enacted Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provides critical assistance to individuals, small businesses, and nonprofits struggling to make ends meet. Questions about what the CARES Act does and how it might benefit you? Read this memo prepared by Trister, Ross, Schadler & Gold, PLLC and join us TOMORROW, Tuesday, April 7 at 4 PM ET for a Facebook Live discussion.

Nonprofits Should Protect Voters’ Rights from the Coronavirus

Stay-at-home orders and rising coronavirus infection rates have changed all of our lives. While it is tempting to stay focused on our immediate needs, challenges, and opportunities, we cannot ignore important events that are months away. Nonprofit advocates should act now to protect and enhance ballot access to ensure everyone who has the right to vote can do so safely.

Ensuring Fair Elections During Public Health Emergencies

States are racing to postpone Presidential primary elections and make other last-minute changes to slow the spread of the coronavirus virus. However, sudden changes in election dates, voting locations, and procedures creates confusion and barriers to the polls. Nonprofits are needed now, more than ever, to ensure that the right to vote does not suffer under authorities’ efforts to protect public safety.

Nonprofit Advocacy and COVID-19

As the number of people infected with the COVID-19 virus (referred to colloquially as the “coronavirus”) increases throughout the United States, nonprofits are playing an important role in providing services and educating impacted communities about how to reduce their exposure and what to do if symptoms appear.

CARES Act Brings New “Universal” Charitable Deduction for 2020

The historic $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act provides much needed relief to individuals, businesses, and nonprofits impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. 501(c)(3) public charities and their donors should be aware of a new tax incentive in the law that could strengthen nonprofit fundraising at this critical time.

The Coronavirus Has Not Stopped the 2020 Census

Although the coronavirus has upended all of our lives, nonprofits need to continue to prioritize communicating about the census and support our community members in responding to it. Responding to the 2020 Census is easy, safe, and important. From the comfort of your home, you can choose to respond online, by phone (including TDD), or by mail (if you received a mailing).
