Integrating Mental Health In Perinatal Care Settings

In the April Perinatal Mental Health & Well-Being issue, Jessica Harrison of the University of California San Francisco provides an overview of perspectives of interprofessional clinicians on mental health treatment within perinatal health care settings.

She finds that there are notable structural constraints to integrating perinatal mental health. Perinatal health clinicians face limited time in the clinical encounter, a lack of mental health competence, and high patient volume.

Harrison recommends better staffing for mental health care teams in perinatal health care settings, the development of educational modules, and increasing the time of clinical encounters.

To learn more about this paper, check out a recent episode of A Health Podyssey featuring Jessica Harrison and Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil discussing the findings.
