John -- What is Governor Brian Kemp thinking? He ordered that beaches across Georgia be reopened, over the objections of local towns who did the responsible thing by closing them to promote social distancing.
Just look at Tybee Island, one of Georgia’s most popular vacation destinations. It depends on tourism dollars and beachgoers to keep its economy afloat.
But the people of Tybee made the tough decision to close their beaches for the good of public health across Georgia. And on March 20th, their beaches were shuttered. Plenty of other islands and beachside towns made the same hard choice, but then Brian Kemp jumped in and suddenly swept all of that away.
Kemp’s new executive order overruled all local decisions, which is why last weekend all beaches were open for business -- even when towns had done their best to close them for public health. Worse still, if towns defy his order and try to close beaches officials could be subject to fines or jail time.
Maybe it’s because his pal Donald Trump is indicating he wants the “economy open again” sooner rather than later?
Rep. Hank Johnson is fighting for a fact-based, science-driven response to COVID-19. That means putting our neighbors' lives before the stock market. We must always put people first! Will you help us get that message out far and wide by chipping in a small contribution today if you can?
Thank you,
