John, we need to talk about Maryland's Senate race.

The Senate majority is up for grabs this cycle, and Democrats need to hold 23 seats to maintain control of the chamber. Adding to this difficult landscape, Democratic retirements in states like Maryland have created open seats that Republicans are hoping to flip.

At the start of the cycle, Cook Political Report labeled Maryland a "solid" Democratic seat … until two-term Republican former Gov. Larry Hogan entered the race and the rating shifted away from us. Now, the latest polling shows Hogan ahead of EMILYs List-endorsed candidate Angela Alsobrooks by a four-point margin.

Hogan was handpicked for this race by Sen. Mitch McConnell because, despite his "moderate" reputation, it's undeniable that he would be a safe Republican vote in the Senate. In fact, Hogan vetoed expanding abortion access in Maryland as governor — so we know he will be in lockstep with Senate Republicans and their anti-choice agenda. Maryland is a historically blue state, but that won't matter if a Republican senator wins this race and gives the GOP the votes it needs to enact a national abortion ban. And with Hogan in the race, that's a possibility we CANNOT ignore.

That's why we can't take any chances, John. To protect this open seat, it's going to be an all-hands-on-deck effort to support Angela and help her pull ahead in her must-win Senate race.
