Why am I pro-climate? Because I’m pro-fish.

I grew up along the Kuskokwim River. In my part of the world babies teeth on dried salmon strips and people eat salmon any way you can think of for pretty much every meal. I grew up fishing commercially and for subsistence—I captained my own boat at 14, so when I say I’m pro-fish I mean it!

But being pro-fish means addressing the elephant in the room: climate change. It’s not an exaggeration to say that because of unsustainable factory trawling, a warming climate, mismanagement, and more, we could be facing the collapse of an entire ecosystem and an entire way of life in Alaska.

But since I’ve gotten to Congress, I’ve been focusing on solutions like common sense legislation that actually gets something done for our fisheries AND protects Alaskans' way of life. It’s worked: I’ve been able to push for pro-fish legislation that’s going to make a difference.

I know the rest of the Blue Dogs are doing the exact same thing for their communities.

Because here’s the truth – representing rural America means representing communities that often rely on a healthy environment for their way of life and their economic security.
