There's an alarming trend developing across the country: Gun lobby-backed
state legislators are pushing dangerous legislation to arm teachers and
school staff, forcing guns into our schools.

These laws will not make schools safer. Instead, they put students more at
risk.

Just last week, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill into law allowing
school employees to bring guns onto school property, despite widespread
opposition from students, teachers, and gun violence survivors. Our
volunteers worked tirelessly to defeat this bill—but in the end, Iowa
lawmakers proved themselves beholden to the gun lobby instead of their own
constituents.

If our representatives won't listen to us in State Houses when our lives
are on the line, maybe they'll listen to us at the ballot box in
November—when their jobs are on the line.

And this isn't just happening in Iowa.

We've seen bills arming teachers pop up in Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia,
Utah, Wyoming, Alaska, Idaho, South Dakota, Missouri, Nebraska, and West
Virginia. And our grassroots movement is mobilizing to keep guns out of
our classrooms in these states.

In Tennessee, our volunteers are rallying at the State Capitol to stop a
dangerous bill arming teachers in its tracks. This comes after we drove
hundreds of calls to lawmakers, staged walkouts in schools, and testified
against this deadly legislation. They are set to vote this afternoon, and
no matter the outcome, we're not backing down now. Because when we
organize, we can win.

Earlier this legislative session, Idaho lawmakers introduced a
catastrophic bill that would have let school staff or volunteers with a
license to carry bring their guns onto school grounds. In response,
student leaders, volunteers, and activists delivered a petition with over
800 signatures to state legislators—and the bill was defeated.

These gun safety fights often end in State Capitols, but they start at our
polling places. When we elect leaders who are committed to keeping us
safe, we don't have to just defend the status quo—we can demand better.
