Dear Friend,

As a young person in Maine, I understand how thinking and acting on climate change can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve launched Climate&Me -- our new initiative to help young Mainers find their place in climate action.

By combining your interests, hobbies, and strengths with the needs of your community, we’re supporting young folks across Maine to make a difference and support state and local climate initiatives. 

The foundation of Climate&Me is rooted in my own story. I grew up with a deep love for the environment, especially the ocean. I was fascinated by learning how ocean organisms functioned, and so I set out to turn my interest into my profession. I earned my undergraduate degree in marine science from the University of New England in 2019 and started my first job as a fisheries scientist. 

A few years into my career, though, and halfway through earning my master’s (how convenient!), I realized three things: 

First, climate change was the common denominator of my work. In nearly every aspect of marine science, effects from warming ocean temperatures and other climate effects were causing tremendous pressure on the environment and ecosystems.

Second, although I liked practicing science, I liked engaging others in my work much more. I had a knack for communicating what I was seeing in the field, and helping others understand and appreciate the effects of climate change in the natural world. 

Third, I loved working with students in my research lab to take what they were learning beyond the classroom. By working closely and meaningfully with young people, I saw them become activated to make a difference and find their passion and mission.

I realized that my role in climate -- my Climate&Me! -- was using my training, skill, and passion, to engage young people about climate change and climate action. Now, I’m lucky enough to work with young Mainers in my role with the Governor's Office of Policy Innovation and the Future.

I invite you to explore our new Climate&Me website to start exploring the unique ways you can make a difference in addressing climate change, find resources for youth to consider their actions on climate, and better understand the work the State of Maine is doing to take action on climate. 

I'm inspired by the youth I work with each day, who are doing amazing things: writing novels, like Leela; starting businesses, like Max and Cole, and working on climate policy + science like Amara, Alyssa, Edge, and Mo. Plus so many more!
