Lt. Gov. Burt Jones is being investigated by a state prosecutor for his role as a “fake” elector in an alleged attempt to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election.Or this headline earlier this month?
Arizona Republicans who falsely posed as electors for Donald Trump in 2020 have appeared before a grand jury in recent days and invoked their Fifth Amendment right against self-incriminationAfter Trump lost the 2020 election, instead of accepting the election results, he devised a plan with allies in seven swing states to falsely grant electoral votes to himself instead of Biden.
John, those allies actively participated in Trump’s plan to overturn the election results and reject the peaceful transfer of power. We’ve seen several states bring charges against these “fake electors” – and now more states have launched investigations.
It’s a good thing for our democracy that states are taking action to hold “fake electors” accountable, and more states should do the same if the facts and law support it.

25 of the 84 fake electors have been charged with felonies. Michigan, Georgia and Nevada have already investigated and charged fake electors in their states in 2023. Now, Arizona is beginning investigations into fake electors in their state, while investigations in other states are also ongoing.
Other states with fake electors should consider following the blueprint laid out in Michigan [[link removed]] , and where they can, they should not hesitate to hold election deniers accountable for harm they caused by attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.
