Jack,
In light of the COVID-19 outbreak in New Mexico and across our country, I have announced that I fully support New Mexico’s county clerks to conduct an all-mail primary election in 2020.
The next step here is to wait for the New Mexico Supreme Court to approve the request.
-Once granted, an absentee ballot will be mailed to every eligible major party voter in the state.
-In-person voting centers will be made available to voters for specific circumstances such as requiring assistance because of a disability or a language barrier, to drop off a ballot or request a replacement ballot, or to register to vote or to update certain information on an existing voter registration.
-Finally, we will be alerting all voters of this change by postcard.
Here in New Mexico, the measures we’ve put in place—online voter registration, automated voter registration, and vote-by-mail—put us in an extremely efficient position to prepare for an event like this. We’ve already led the country in proactive measures like these; now, we will lead the country in ensuring our right to vote is protected during this national crisis.
Above all, it is most important to me that New Mexicans are safe during this time. Our commitment is always to good government—and that means ensuring voter safety, too.
Let’s go,
Maggie
