John, the enemies of democracy plan out their strategy in decades – not months or years.
Just look at the shadowy movement to impose an Article V convention on the entire nation.
Extremists and wealthy special interests have relentlessly been trying to call an Article V Convention so they have free rein to rewrite our Constitution – without any input from people like you and me.
Why? Because the forces behind Article V think it's their best chance of passing hugely unpopular policies – like a national abortion ban, gun safety rollbacks, or repealing the Affordable Care Act – that they know could never pass through the ordinary democratic process.
The most notorious of these groups has been active since the 1970s – and now, there's just 6 states between us and utter constitutional chaos.
That's why I'm so glad Common Cause is on the case. It's only in the past handful of years that Article V has finally faced the level of opposition necessary – and that's thanks to people like you who have spoken up, educated their lawmakers on the threat, and helped us sound the alarm about what many experts believe is one of the greatest threats to our democracy today.
And we get results. 2024 is already shaping up to be a banner year for our work to STOP an Article V convention – not only did we stop Idaho from signing on, but we were even able to rescind New York's convention call, a key setback for our opponents.
But here's the problem, John – this isn't a fight that we can win in just one year. Even with our successes this year, we’re still fighting 54 active bills for Article V. If we don't put up the same level of effort in 2025, or 2026, or 2027 that we did this year, we'll be right back where we started – or worse, locked in for constitutional chaos.
That's why I'm asking you today to do the single most impactful thing you can to defend our constitutional rights – step up as a Guardian for Democracy.
