In the past, we’ve told you about a tale of two Senates, each with a one-seat majority—one in Lansing and one in Washington D.C, which Elissa is running to serve in.
Today, we wanted to tell you the story of two Houses.
Here in Michigan, Democrats are back in the majority. Last week, Representatives-elect Mai Xiong and Peter Herzberg won special elections for open seats in the 13th state House district and the 25th House district, respectively. These wins will restore a 2-seat Democratic majority in the state House in Lansing.
Last year, Michigan’s legislature delivered significant wins including gun safety laws in the wake of the shootings at Michigan State University and Oxford High School, repealing Right to Work, and repealing a 1931 law that banned abortions. With their renewed majority in the House, they will be able to continue to work on behalf of Michigan families.
Meanwhile, in the U.S. House, Republicans have a slim majority, and likewise can only lose 2 votes on any given issue. As a consequence, the House has operated at the whims of the most extreme members of the Republican party, who have used their leverage to block responsible, bipartisan legislation.
While the U.S. House has been mired in chaos, Michigan Democrats in the state House have delivered for their constituents, defending the right to an abortion and protecting our children in classrooms and communities across the state.
Why bring this up? To demonstrate the type of leadership Elissa will bring to the U.S. Senate.
While some sow chaos, raise controversy, hype their social media followers, and contribute to the ongoing gridlock in DC, Elissa is going to continue working with her colleagues on both sides of the aisle to deliver results for Michigan and the country. How do we know? Because that’s what she’s always done and because Michiganders get the job done.
She’s going to take that classic Midwestern pragmatism to the Senate, where she will work to deliver on issues from gun safety to abortion rights to voting rights and so much more.
But it won’t be easy to get there. National Republicans are going to throw everything they have at us in an effort to win this seat and protect the status quo in Washington.
But we know what can defeat oodles of money from national Republicans: your support. This campaign is built on folks like you chipping in $5 here and $10 there. With less than 7 months to go, we mean it when we say it really does all add up.
Will you chip in today to support Elissa’s campaign for Senate in Michigan? Together we can defend this seat and our slim majority in the Senate.
