This Week at General Conference

It's hard to believe that the Postponed 2020 General Conference is finally here! While General Conference kicks-off today, delegates will spend much of the day in training. For the remainder of the week, Wednesday through Saturday, delegates will spend a significant amount of time working in their committees. Committee work is not livestreamed.

All proposed legislation at General Conference is assigned a committee. The committees will work through the legislation and ultimately vote on whether or not to send it to the plenary floor, where the whole body will vote on it. A word of caution: This week you may hear of legislation passing, but it likely has just passed its committee. Most legislation isn't officially passed until it's approved in a plenary vote. Even then, some items, like constitutional amendments, must go to a vote of all annual conferences. All that to say, this week we're just getting started!

Keeping Up With General Conference

United Methodist News is the best source for General Conference news. It's offering several ways to follow the action over the next two weeks.

The most current daily schedule is available on the General Conference livestream webpage. Remember, only plenary sessions are livestreamed.
