Dear John,

We are Terry Reintke and Bas Eickhout, your European Green leading candidates for the elections in June.

In less 6 weeks, Europeans in 27 countries elect a new European Parliament. Our votes can change the course of the European Union.

Across Europe, people are struggling with rising prices, of the energy crisis, climate change threatens the existence of millions and far-right forces target women, LGBTI communities, marginalised groups.

Now, more than ever, it's time to #ChooseCourage in the European elections.

Join us in our struggle for a Green and just Europe, for human rights for everyone and against the rise of fascism.

We have six more weeks to spread our Green message across Europe. But we can’t do this alone: we need you. Join us in spreading the word. These elections matter. We can make a difference.

So, today, we’re asking you to join our campaign. Sign up to our supporters list and join our fight against the far right and for a more social and greener Europe!

Dear John, as Greens, we believe to have answers for the most challenging issues of our time. And with a lot of courage, and together with you, we can achieve a future that is full of hope, democratic, feminist, social, green, and inclusive. Together we can turn the future Green and make Europe a better place.

Thanks for your support,

Terry and Bas

MEET TERRY AND BAS

Terry Reintke was born and raised in the German Ruhr area, a former hub for coal-mining and steel production. She joined the European Parliament in 2014. Since then, she has made a name for herself in Brussels as an experienced and constructive bridge-builder, a tough yet fair negotiator. Since 2022, she has been the chair of the Green Group in the European Parliament.

Sometimes it’s hard to be optimistic these days. What gives you hope for the future?

My hope arises from the courage demonstrated by European citizens: protesters challenging the far-right in Germany, LGBTI families in Italy, abortion rights defenders in Malta, and many, many more. Whether from villages or big cities, people bravely stand up to defend their fundamental rights, and that is a real beacon of hope for me.

Given your roots in a region that has faced significant challenges since the departure of its industrial base, how has this influenced your political agenda?

Very much so. My home region is the perfect example of an extensive transformation and how many aspects of the lives of people are touched by it. It shows how important creative ideas are. How important it is to involve those who are affected by the changes. And finally, also what positive role the European Union can play in these transformation processes. I know that a transformation can only be successful if it goes hand in hand with the social policies necessary. If we want to make the Green transformation a success for the whole of Europe, this is what we need to do now. The next five years have to be about a Green and Social Deal for Europe. It will be about making sure that the transformation benefits all, not just the few. The Green transformation is a chance for all of us - let’s make it count.

Outside of politics, what are you passionate about?

I love running, especially in nature - and biking. Whenever possible, travelling through Europe, I try to find the time for a short run on the banks of the Vistula, the Casa de Campo Park, or the Meadows in Edinburgh. I also very much enjoy a good puzzle. So, if you have any suggestions for amazing, diverse, feminist puzzles, shoot them my way :)

Born in Groesbeek, the Netherlands, Bas Eickhout studied Chemistry and Environmental Science at the Radboud University in Nijmegen and lives in Utrecht. Entering the European Parliament in 2009 for the Dutch Green party GroenLinks, Bas Eickhout quickly established himself as an important voice for climate action. His expertise as an environmental scientist has been instrumental in shaping legislation, earning him a reputation as a knowledgeable and effective advocate for ecological issues.

Why do we need a strong Green result in this European election?

Greens showed time and time again that we have the courage and the vision for a green and sustainable future. It is possible to make a change for the better! We need to call out, with as many Green MEPs as possible, the conservative politicians that keep on protecting the interests of polluting industries, the use of toxics or threaten the human rights of European citizens.

What is your top priority to tackle the climate crisis?

My top priority is enforcing a Green transformation of our economy and industries with sustainable policies that benefit all. Conservatives and right-wing politicians tell a lie, that Green policies are a threat to the economy. The contrary is true: we need to transform our society and make it futureproof with a Green industry plan, which will benefit all.

Outside of politics, what are you passionate about?

My passion is hiking in the mountains, impressed by the overwhelming beauty and strength of nature. It's these moments that keep motivating me to continue the fight for a green and sustainable future.
