(and the Democrats who greenwash his fossil fuel agenda)

Folks – I don’t want to hear another word from Democrats about “record climate spending.”

If you measure only the number of dollars spent, then Biden’s claim that his administration has spent more money on climate policy than any other administration is technically correct.

But that isn’t even close to the whole story, and Democrats know it.

Any climate legislation passed by Democrats in recent years is completely dwarfed by the constantly expanding budget for the Pentagon – the single largest producer of carbon emissions in the U.S.

The DOD’s self-reported carbon emissions are equivalent to the annual output of Sweden, but their own report doesn’t account for the countless defense contractors who contribute to their total bootprint of fossil fuel consumption and emissions.

If we want to measure how serious Democrats are about the climate emergency, look at the contrast between the FY23 annual Pentagon budget authorized by the Democratically controlled House and Senate in 2022, and the climate spending earmarked for the same period

A graph displaying the difference between Military spending ($813.3 billion) and climate spending ($44.9 billion), prepared by Stephen Semler based on data from the Office of Management and Budget. The title of the chart reads: “Biden’s proposed budget spends 18 times more on the Pentagon than on climate programs”

(Worth noting: While the Democrats initially authorized $813.3B for FY23, they ended up spending up to $916B – more than double the annual climate spending allocation over the initial DOD budget.)

Every time you hear Democrats brag about the “most climate spending ever” this election, remember that it’s not even close to enough (and tell them that).

For years we’ve been told that +1.5°C warming was the point of no return that had to be avoided at all costs. It was the basis of the Paris Climate Accords; a matter of survival for low-lying nations in the Global South; and a matter of long-term survival of the human species.

We’ve already hit +1.5° in the first three months of 2024. Now we’re on a fast track for +2°C.

Democrats keep bragging about the fact they’ve passed the biggest climate bill in history, but the critical data they keep leaving out is that it’s far too little, and almost too late for all of us.

This isn’t just my assessment as a lifelong antiwar and climate activist, and it’s not only the assessment of climate experts the world over (though that should be enough).

This truth is so obvious that even the world’s biggest polluters are raising the alarm. For over a decade now the Pentagon has called climate change the biggest threat to our national security – ignoring their own complicity in accelerating the climate breakdown.

The truth is so obvious that even Wall Street’s favorite, BLOOMBERG, says that “record climate spending” isn’t enough.

A graphic featuring a headline from Bloomberg News set against a windmill erected in the distance and components of windmills lying on the ground awaiting installation. The headline reads: “Global Clean Energy Spending Surges to $1.8 trillion. It’s not enough.

Every time I share a climate update, it’s a lot of bad news to take in. But there is good news, too – we have the power to change this if we face the uncomfortable truths right now.

We can’t continue on the same path with the same leaders and expect different results.

My opponent is a former lobbyist turned career-politician who has been happily cashing Big Oil’s campaign checks – and slow-walking climate policy – for decades.

No congressman on Big Oil’s payroll can be trusted to take the climate crisis seriously. I’m a lifelong antiwar and climate activist, and I need your help to defeat fossil fuel’s favorite Democrat in Washington State. Can you pitch in today?

There’s no two ways about this, we have to stop putting carbon in the atmosphere. We have to get off fossil fuels. Period.

Both Republicans and Democrats have accelerated global warming by EXPANDING fossil fuel extraction and pushing endless American militarism.

Democrats like my opponent have been gaslighting us for decades, first with “carbon swap” tax breaks for corporations – now bragging about spending a FRACTION of what we need to spend for a serious climate plan.

I organized for years within the Democratic Party pushing for serious climate action. I met dead ends at every turn precisely because of men like Rick Larsen and their corporate puppet-masters.

Help me win this seat for working people and carry our collective voices into the heart of Congress – where we will not be ignored.

In solidarity,

Jason Call
