Representatives Espaillat, Nadler and Goldman Condemn Antisemitism and Targeting of Jewish Students at Columbia University

NEW YORK, NY — Today, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Jerry Nadler (NY-12), and Daniel Goldman (NY-10) issued the following joint statement condemning antisemitism on the campus of Columbia University:

“Over the past week, we’ve witnessed what could be legitimate debate venture into dangerous antisemitic rhetoric, attacks and intimidation on Columbia University’s campus. We are united in our strong condemnation of the antisemitism and bigotry facing the Jewish community. No Jewish person in our great city should fear for their safety.

As Passover begins and Jewish people across the world gather with family and in community to retell the ancient story of the Exodus from slavery in Egypt, we are reminded of the strength and resilience of the Jewish people throughout history.

Scoring political points with an issue as grave as this will not keep students safe. We must find real and enduring solutions. Prioritizing the safety and security of every student, faculty member and Jewish person that we represent at Columbia and across New York City is our highest priority. We will continue to reject antisemitism in all its forms on campus, in our districts, or wherever else it is manifested in a city as richly diverse as ours.”

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his fourth term in Congress. Representative Espaillat currently serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Committee on Appropriations responsible for funding the federal government’s vital activities and serves as Ranking Member of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee of the committee during the 118th Congress. “Durante la semana pasada, hemos sido testigos de lo que podría ser un debate legítimo que se ha convertido en una peligrosa retórica antisemita, ataques e intimidación en el campus de la Universidad Columbia. Estamos unidos en nuestra enérgica condena del antisemitismo y la intolerancia que enfrenta la comunidad judía. Ningún judío en nuestra gran ciudad debería temer por su seguridad.

Cuando comienza la Pascua judía y el pueblo judío de todo el mundo se reúne en familia y en comunidad para volver a contar la historia ancestral del Éxodo de la esclavitud en Egipto, recordamos la fuerza y la resiliencia del pueblo judío a lo largo de la historia.
