Hello,

In this week’s edition, I discuss how to improve bad circumstances and recognize your intrinsic worth. Then, I talk to author and speaker Tor Nørretranders about the entropy of emotion, the over-civilization of societal structures, and how relationships shape perception. From the archives, I give advice for couples on precisely how to communicate in a way that will benefit their relationship long-term.

Advice

Change Your Orientation To Improve Your Life

As soon as you start walking the pathway that makes things better, they immediately become better because your whole orientation changes. If you are in a bad place but you are escaping, that is positive — even if it is a bad place. You might think it is still bad, but it is better than being in a bad place that is getting worse.

Yet you do not want to judge who you are so harshly that you just destroy yourself and everything is cast into a pit. You want to take a look at yourself and say, “Look, you are a person among persons, and you have intrinsic worth. You have your flaws, your sins, and your domain of ignorance and inadequacy, but that does not mean you are entirely worthless.”

You have a base-level value that is intrinsic worth reflective of the fact you are made in the divine image, in the most fundamental sense. That is due a certain degree of baseline love. If no one ever told you that before, go out and try to get your act together in some micro ways. When you do, you will find that process works — and you will be less miserable. Then, you can try doing it on a broader scale.

Why A Change Of Plans Causes Emotional Destabilization

We do not see objects, think about them, evaluate them, and then decide how to act on them — or, if we do, we do it rarely, slowly, and with a lot of thought. What we see, instead, are obstacles or pathways with tools that will move us forward. When there are no obstacles in front of you — when there is a nice flat road — you experience positive emotion. You think, “This is a task I can undertake. The sailing is clear. It is a good day.” When there is an obstacle in front of you, you experience a little pang of disappointment and anxiety. You think, “Can I make it around that obstacle?”

Jordan Peterson’s Advice For Married Couples

In a conversation I had with Dr. John Delony last year, we discussed the inner workings of marriage. I addressed the details of what beneficial communication should be in a marriage: Talk about the domestic economy and the practicalities of your life together for 90 minutes a week and date at least once a week for that amount of time as well. If you do not, you will feel isolated and develop a backlog of communication. You should discuss your needs and wants with each other, which takes trust — and vulnerability. Make an agreement to do so, and then practice it.
