Friend,

This Earth Day I thought I’d highlight one of my favorite things about Fairfield County – the Long Island Sound.

I’ve spent my career in Congress advocating for investments in environmental preservation, in no small part because of my love for the Long Island Sound. You see, there are plenty of reasons to keep the Sound clean. Countless species call the water, beaches, and marshes home. Local businesses rely on the continued vitality of the Sound’s ecosystem. Families look forward to enjoying Connecticut’s beautiful beaches this summer.

But I won’t pretend I don’t have a stake in the matter. As you may know, I’m a big shellfish fan. When I’m home in Connecticut, one of my favorite ways to spend the afternoon is deep in mud, collecting oysters and bringing them home for dinner. Last month, I ventured out on a windy day to harvest some local oysters.

While out on the water, I shared a bit about my keen interest in keeping Connecticut’s oysters fresh.

I hope you’ll find a way, like I do, to enjoy the Long Island Sound. Visit the Maritime Aquarium to see (and touch!) some of the species that swim below the Sound’s surface. Take a walk at Sherwood Island State Park, which offers unparalleled views across the Sound. Or, enjoy some of Connecticut’s clean and delicious oysters.
