[link removed] [[link removed]] Happy Earth Day, Community!

This Earth Day, the theme is Planet vs. Plastics. Organizations worldwide are committing to an ambitious 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040.

While this bold climate action is overdue, ambitious targets only go so far. There is no climate justice without equity.

And as we learned from the January 22nd winter storms, we have a lot at stake.

While no one expected the severity of the flooding, many Southeastern San Diego neighborhoods have been underserved and denied regular storm drain maintenance for decades. This, and failures to recognize the impacts of climate change, left families vulnerable to catastrophic flooding and damage.

And it’s not just San Diego. The climate crisis disproportionately harms underserved communities everywhere. That’s why we must center historically unheard voices in the climate conversation.

We are all responsible for tackling the climate crisis, and those most heavily impacted deserve a seat at the table.

That’s why I worked to include underserved communities in our regional energy equity conversations through San Diego Community Power and the San Diego Energy Equity Campus project. That’s why I will never stop fighting for climate equity.

But I can’t do it without you. This Earth Day, let’s commit to building a more sustainable and equitable world starting right here in our County.
