Today is Earth Day! Earth Day is when the world acknowledges the protections needed for our Earth. From plastic pollution to food and environment to combating climate change, we must emphasize conserving our precious planet Earth.
John, we can't talk about Earth Day without talking about water! 🌊💧
Water is not just a basic necessity;
it's a fundamental human right. However, have you ever considered water quality in your own state, city, or county? During this global recognition, let's talk about the disparities closer to home than we think.
Historically, Black communities have been underserved when it comes to water infrastructure. Many older water systems in these areas deteriorate, leading to water quality issues such as lead contamination. Yes, that means even today, in 2024, majority Black cities, like
Jackson, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Flint, and Campti, are forced to live with the consequences of environmental racism and denied access to clean and reliable water.
We've had many demands for President Biden and Congress – one of them including new and improved infrastructure. This is a clear example of why it's long overdue.
John, this is a part of the long-term fight for ensuring Black communities no longer remain the hardest hit by water contamination. Our people deserve it. Use our easy tool and take 2 minutes to send a letter to your congressperson and demand they fight for us.
Make no mistake: This is intentional. This is directed, targeted violence towards Black communities, who are routinely pushed out of their communities and into vulnerable margins. This is a reality we won't continue to accept.
Take Campti, LA, where our families are forced to use bottled water for cooking and drinking. The reason? The aging pipes are falling apart, leaving the faucet water brown and smelling of bleach. Many families have had to travel 10 to 15 miles to wash their clothes for years.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over half of Campti's predominantly Black population lives below the poverty line. Shockingly, the median household income in Campti is only $15,428.
The problem is MUCH deeper than just water – because even with a functioning water system, these families are still in need. Indeed, a tale of two Americas…
So please, this Earth Day, write a letter to your congressperson to help us demand increased infrastructure efforts to improve access to clean water.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
