Legislative Update

This week was the final committee deadline for bills to get a hearing. The deadline is when committees must act favorably on bills to keep them alive to potentially be included in the final omnibus bills. Many constituents visited this week, and we celebrated Veterans Day at the Capitol. Veterans had a rally, speakers, and heard about legislation that is important to them. Students from GFW Middle School came to the Capitol for a field trip. Residents of the district voiced their opposition to HF 3566 which would add a fee to electronic recycling programs.

State and Local Government Committee

In committee, we heard HF 3431 [ [link removed] ], which is the State and Local Government Policy and Finance bill for the 2024 legislative session. There are several items in this bill that would be considered an irresponsible use of our tax dollars. One of these is the healthy and sustainable food options account of $500,000. The funds would be used for enhancing and sustaining healthy food alternatives on the state capitol complex. Currently there are many options that would be considered healthy in the cafeterias. One possible solution for this issue is negotiating the food contracts to ensure more healthy food items are available.

Last session, HF 1830 [ [link removed] ] included $45,000 to fund a 13-member State Emblems Redesign Commission to develop and adopt a new design for the official state flag and the official state seal. Per the bill, ?The designs must accurately and respectfully reflect Minnesota's shared history, resources, and diverse cultural communities. Symbols, emblems, or likenesses that represent only a single community or person, regardless of whether real or stylized, may not be included in a design.?

Following the passage of this bill, many people in our district voiced their disapproval of the change to our flag and the lack of opportunity to have a statewide vote on this issue. The process was frustrating and having 13 people make this decision on behalf of 5.5 million residents will only further divide the people of our great state. During the committee meeting, an amendment was offered to place two questions on the ballot this year. One question would be related to the flag and the second question would be related to the emblem. It?s unfortunate the majority party did not accept the amendment.

Minnesota Statute 331A addresses qualified newspapers and guidance for publication of legal notices. With several newspapers ceasing operation, this affects many areas of our district. An amendment was offered to allow the use of websites until a different newspaper can be designated as the paper of record. However, the amendment needs to be expanded to include counties, school districts, home rule charter and statutory city or town. This issue is not partisan, and we will continue to work with the majority party for a resolution before the legislative session ends.

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (GFW) begins construction

It?s great when communities work together for the education of our children. GFW had a groundbreaking ceremony for the new PreK-12 school which will be in Gibbon. The event began with a welcome address from Superintendent Jeff Horton and visits from city, county, and state officials. I?m sure everyone is looking forward to the new school which is scheduled to be completed later in 2025. It took a tremendous amount of work and collaboration to see the vision become a reality. The new school will offer many opportunities for students. I?m looking forward to the grand opening and to learn more about the School Farm.
