Dear Friend –
Google's motto used to be “do no evil,” but it appears there’s a caveat: Unless it makes Google a buck or two.
They want us to believe they care – and the thing is, they have enough power to really make a difference! But right now, Google is using smoke and mirrors to distract from the most powerful tools they have – but just aren’t using – to fight the climate crisis.
They are still ignoring the way that climate disinformation rampantly spreads on their platforms [1], operating without a clear path to meeting their own green energy and water use targets [2], and forging sketchy partnerships with Big Oil [3] that make fossil fuels more profitable. They’re also pursuing resource-guzzling Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies at a pace that threatens to literally undo all the climate progress we have made. [4]
This Earth Day, let’s send a strong message to Google: The time to act is now. Sign our petition and tell Google that their users demand real climate action.
TAKE ACTION
Earth Day was started in 1970 out of popular outrage against air and water pollution in the U.S. That people’s movement led to significant changes like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. But fifty-four years after the first Earth Day, we’re up against a rapidly worsening climate crisis. Far too many companies, including Big Tech corporations like Google, have been putting their short-term profits ahead of long-term sustainability.
If Google got their money, their infrastructure, and their products in line with real climate action, they could make a difference in the biggest fight of our lives, and help us save a livable planet for our kids.
We need Google to divest from oil, gas, and technocentric false solutions. We need them to tackle the spread of climate mis- and dis-information on Google Search and YouTube. We need them to go all-in on deploying the renewable and clean energy technologies we already have available to us and find feasible solutions to the resource intensive demands of AI.
Google needs to hear from us all—their users and the people who make their success possible—that we demand it. Sign the petition today and demand that Google do better—a lot better—when it comes to real climate action.
Thanks for taking action today,
Nicole Gill
