Recently, I received a message on Twitter telling me that I don't belong in office. The reason?

"Nobody with the name Islam belongs in American public office."

Honestly, I'm not surprised -- this isn't the first time I've been harassed for who I am.

But I am surprised that this person has so completely lost sense of what it means to be American. This country is supposed to be a place where everyone has a chance to succeed, no matter their background.

Someone like me holding office isn't a threat to this country -- it's the realization of the American dream.
