This year, National Volunteer Week is April 21 to 27. At the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, everything we do is fueled by the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. They are the heart of our nationwide network of chapters, and make possible our advocacy efforts, education programming, loss and healing efforts, and Out of the Darkness Walks. AFSP doesn't just need our volunteers, we are defined by them.
To celebrate National Volunteer Week, join us on Thursday, April 25, at 10am ET for our Instagram Live event, "The Heart of AFSP: How Volunteers Bring Hope to Their Communities." Joining us for this important panel discussion will be longtime AFSP volunteers Amy Grosso and Dionne C. Monsanto, both of whom are survivors of suicide loss whose personal experiences have spurred them on to help others and make an incredible difference in their communities.
To learn more about our incredible volunteers, you can also read these articles from AFSP's Real Stories blog, as well as our recent news release:
- Dennis Lasley, chair of AFSP's Chapter Leadership Council, wrote about his connection to the cause and what volunteering means to him. Read his story, ["Why I Return: Over a Decade of Volunteering With the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention."]([link removed])
- Mike Lamma, AFSP executive vice president and chief operating officer, reflected on the 2024 Chapter Leadership Conference, which brings together our volunteers from across the country each year to reflect on our mission, share ideas, and draw inspiration for the year ahead. Read his piece, ["AFSP’s 2024 Chapter Leadership Conference: Fostering Leadership."]([link removed])
- [Our recent news release]([link removed]) highlights key ways that volunteers across AFSP's 74 chapters are making a tremendous impact. Read how they helped enact 51 state bills, served as members of our Scientific Council and Scientific Advisors, became trained Talk Saves Lives presenters, and volunteered for Healing Conversations and Out of the Darkness Walks.
We hope you enjoy these stories as much as we do –– and tune in at [instagram.com/afspnational]([link removed]) on Thursday, April 25, at 10am ET.
