Christian Nationalism Published Monday, April 22, 2024 NO MEETING THIS WEEK NEXT MEETING May 8 AMERICA's CHRISTIAN CREDIT UNION BOB LINN Christian Nationalism an American Tradition Preserving America's Christian Nationalism Will Sustain Our Future On October 25, 2023, Congressman Mike Johnson, the newly elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, spoke of divine providence and the rise of nations. He said: I believe that God has ordained and allowed each one of us to be brought here for this specific moment and this time. In response to those comments, the national news agencies sounded the alarm that America was now at great risk from white Christian nationalists. Among the complaints from the political left was that Congressman Mike Jordan, a white Christian Nationalist, was willing to make such shocking statements in the U.S. Legislature and was only two steps from the Presidency. (Should the President & the Vice President be incapacitated, the Speaker of the House would become President.) Far-left filmmaker, Rob Reiner, said to his 2.5 million "X" followers: Christian Nationalism is not only a danger to our Country, it’s a danger to Christianity itself.” America was founded by Christian nationalists They rejected secular ideology as a foundation for governments. They did not erect pagan nationalism. They were Christian, not secular. They were nationalists, not globalists. In a letter from John Adams to Thomas Jefferson regarding the influence of Christianity on the nation: The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the principles of Christianity. The principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence of God. Without religion, this world would be something not fit to be mentioned in polite company. Founding Father and signatory to the U.S. Declaration of Independence, Dr. Benjamin Rush wrote in 1791: In contemplating the political institutions of the United States, I lament that we profess to be republicans, and yet we neglect the only means of establishing and perpetuating our republican forms of government through the universal education of our youth in the principles of Christianity, by means of the Bible. This divine book favors the virtues which constitute the soul of republicanism. ~Dr. Benjamin Rush The Defense of the Bible as a Schoolbook AMERICA'S INSTITUTIONS PRESUPPOSE CHRISTIANITY The fourth Supreme Court Justice of the United States and principle founder of the U.S. system of constitutional law, John Marshall (1755-1835), wrote: It would be strange indeed if our institutions did not presuppose Christianity. ~Dreisbach and Hall Sacred Rights of Conscience THE BIBLE WAS THE SINGLE MOST QUOTED DOCUMENT IN THE FOUNDING ERA One of the most thorough examinations of the American founding era (1760-1805) was done by Indiana University professor, Dr. Charles S. Hyneman and his associate, Dr. Donald S Lutz. Dr. Lutz and Dr. Hyneman reviewed 15,000 political documents from the founding era of America. Their study was published in 1988 and revealed that the single most quoted source of the American Founding Fathers was the Bible at 34%. ~Dr. Donald Lutz The Origins of American Constitutionalism Republican President William Howard Taft (1857-1930) had stated in 1908, in part: No man can study the movement of modern civilization and not realize that the spread Christianity is the basis of modern civilization in the growth of popular self-government. The spirit of Christianity is equality of man before God — the equality of man before the law. Democrat President Woodrow Wilson warned in 1923: We call ours a Christian civilization, a Christian conception of justice. Our civilization can be saved only by becoming permeated with the spirit of Christ and being made free and happy by the practices which spring out of that spirit. U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) wrote on August 22, 1942: The action taken today by your Government has hastened the coming of the inevitable victory of freedom over oppression, of Christian religion over the forces of evil and darkness. Democrat President Truman said, on August 28, 1947: This is a Christian Nation. Democrat President John F. Kennedy wrote to Brazil's President, January 31, 1961: To each of us is entrusted the heavy responsibility of guiding the affairs of a nation founded on Christian ideals. The term Christian nationalism is new on the American landscape. It has replaced an older phrase, Christian patriotism. It has been coined in an effort to make the idea of America as a Christian nation seem evil. Among those who have employed the term to vilify the Christian conscience of Americans is University of Oklahoma sociologist, Dr. Samuel L. Perry. Four years ago, Dr. Samuel Perry joined a sociologist from Indiana University, Andrew Whitehead, to publish the book, Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States. In the book, they describe a Christian Nationalist as someone who promotes "a cultural framework that blurs distinctions between Christian identity and American identity, viewing the two as closely related and seeking to enhance and preserve their union." THERE IS NOTHING TO BE BLURRED! There is no such distinction in our founding era nor in any subsequent generation but this one. On October 27, 2023, article in Time magazine, featured Oklahoma University’s Dr. Perry as he further defined Christian Nationalism: First, Christian nationalism strongly favors traditionalist social relationships and hierarchies. This ideal society revolves around patriarchy, heterosexual marriage, and pronatalism. Dr. Kenneth Woodward in an article last month in First Things commented: Not at all obvious is what same-sex marriages, patriarchy, and encouraging couples to have children (pronatalism) have to do with being white or Christian or nationalist. Kenneth L. Woodward is was editor of the Religion section of Newsweek magazine from 1964 until his retirement in 2002. He now writes for First Things. From the Founding era through the 20th century, Christian nationalism has been the backbone of American society. The term is being used by secularists to mute voices of integrity and reason. A bit over a week ago, Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) welcomed Dr. Russell Reno, editor of First Things Magazine. Dr. Reno spoke to a group of OBU students and faculty on nationalism and Christianity. In closing, he made a statement I loved. He said: NATIONALISM IS THE CURE FOR DANGEROUS GLOBALISM The connection is fodder for another article. William J. Federer's recent article on Christian nationalism provided easy access to some of the quotes I used in this morning’s article. Find his complete comments here. As Alexander Solzhenitsyn admonished his Russian patriots: Live not by lies And the great Russian author, Dostoevsky wrote: Social systems which have no Christian basis inevitably become systems of violence and slavery. BE FAITHFUL TO YOUR DIVINE CALLING! Let us not allow leftist bullies to terminate our calling to make disciples of every nation (Matthew 28), fulfilling his often-repeated promises to Abraham that every nation will be blessed through him. "Behold my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations." Genesis 17:4 "Of Abraham, who is the father of us all, it is written, 'I have made you the father of many nations.'" Romans 4:16, 17 "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations." Matthew 28:19 "Many nations shall come and say: 'Come, let us go to the mountain of the Lord.'" Micah 4:2 "Its lamp is the Lamb and by its light the nations will walk."
