The Democratic Republic of the Congo was pummeled by its worst flooding in decades earlier this year when hundreds died and thousands were displaced. Wildfires in Chile have turned once vibrant neighborhoods to ashes.

Climate Champion, there’s no denying it: The climate crisis is exacerbating these types of extreme weather events in every corner of the world – and too frequently, the poorest countries who have contributed the very least to this crisis are disproportionately burdened by climate impacts like stronger storms, floods, and heat waves.

Like Earth Day, addressing this crisis should be a uniting force for every country and every global institution that holds the keys to climate action.

But it’s not so simple – and Big Oil is using its financial and political power to try to block international climate action at every turn.

In my work with our European and African branches, I have seen the unique collective impact that our community can have. Climate Reality’s global grassroots network of 3.5 million is pushing global leaders and financial institutions to phase out fossil fuels, fund the clean energy transition, and stick to their climate commitments.

From advocating for a successful transition in leadership at the World Bank to calling for G20 nations to end all subsidies for fossil fuel companies, Climate Reality is moving the needle on strengthening international cooperation on climate and making our global finance system work for climate-vulnerable nations.

The decisions that our wealthiest nations and global institutions make now will determine whether or not current and future generations will have a habitable planet. It’s critical that we act.
